Q. Is Mike Doonesbury actually Charlie Pillsbury?
A. Charlie Pillsbury and Garry Trudeau, author of the Doonesbury comic strip, were roommates at Yale University from 1968-1970. Charlie's friends nicknamed him "Doone" and soon thereafter, Garry named his character Mike Doonesbury after Charlie. The resemblance ends there. Mike comes from Oklahoma; Charlie from Minnesota. Mike is a former Democrat, turned Republican; Charlie is a former Democrat, turned Green.
Q. Is Charlie Pillsbury connected to the Pillsbury Company?
A. Charlie's great-grandfather founded the Pillsbury Company in Minneapolis in 1869, and then sold it to a British Flour Milling Trust in 1899. Later, the Pillsbury Company went bankrupt and then, after World War I, became a public company. Today, it's a wholly-owned subsidiary of its former archrival General Mills.
Q. How many signatures does Charlie Pillsbury need to put his name on the ballot on November 5, 2002?
A. Charlie Pillsbury is now on the ballot. We estimated that, by August 7, 2002, we needed to collect about 3,000 signatures of registered voters in the Third District.
We have more than achieved this goal, with your
help, and now Charlie is on the ballot as a Green.
But we still need your volunteer help to win
this election!
Please
volunteer today.
