Key Issues
|
"A true revolution of values will lay hands on the world order and say of war: ‘This way of settling our differences is not just.’…A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual
death."
-- The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., April 4, 1967.
My campaign
will focus on three primary issues:
Democracy, Justice and Peace.
|
|
DEMOCRACY
- Above all we need campaign finance reform, including public funding of all federal
elections. Public financing of campaigns is the only
way to assure that elected officials serve all of us,
not just big business and other wealthy contributors.
-
I am not accepting any PAC or corporate money for this
campaign. I will accept contributions from individuals
only, because I don't want to be on the payroll of the
special interests that fund my Democratic and
Republican opponents. I want to be free to serve, work
for, and represent all the people in all 25 towns of
Connecticut's new 3rd district.
JUSTICE
- First, ALL of us have a right to health
care. We must create a single-payer universal health
care system where everyone has ACCESS to health care.
-
Second, we must end the failed "War on
Drugs" and the prison-industrial complex, which
has put over one million African-Americans and Latinos
in prison, the highest incarceration rate in the
world.
- Third, we should support reparations for
slavery.
- Fourth, everyone is entitled to equal
protection under the law, including gay and lesbian
couples. My opponent voted for the "Defense of
Marriage Act", which is indefensible.
PEACE
- We must stop terrorism through effective
law enforcement, enhanced intelligence and
international cooperation, not by expanding an already
bloated military-industrial complex.
- A $100 billion
missile defense system will not make us safer. The
"Republicrats" divert massive federal
funding away from important domestic programs like
Social Security and Universal Health Care to pay for
military spending, when it is NOT necessary. By doing
so, the "Republicrats" are devastating the
American homeland and, in the end, making all of us
less secure.
- Connecticut's economic future is in
peace, not war.
