I was born and raised in Minnesota, where my great-grandfather's uncle was the third Governor of the State in the 1870s. In the 1970s, my father was a Republican state senator there. One of my first political causes was to work with him to promote employee stock ownership plans to transfer corporate ownership and power to workers.
I moved to New Haven in 1966 to attend Yale University, and I graduated with a B.A. in Latin American Studies in 1972. I earned a law degree from Boston University in 1975, and I studied at Yale Divinity School from 1986-89.
Including my days as a student at Yale University, I've lived in New Haven for over 30 years. I am married to the Rev. Alice Perry, known to all as Allie, one of our state's most effective advocates for peace and justice. Allie is also a pastoral counselor and adjunct faculty member at Andover Newton Theological School, where she teaches courses on nonviolence and narrative therapy.
